What I know about Brazilians…3. Brazilians can add a –inha or –zinha to pretty much every word. Just take caipirinha.
4. Brazilians have awesome names. People I have met are called: ‘Letsgo’, ‘Madeinusa’, ‘Waltdisney’, ‘Isaac Newton’, ‘Mona Lisa’ and ‘John Lennon’. Terrific!

Most people working at the checkout stands in stores are young people with few “people skills” and bored out of their minds. The lady above, who works the special checkout stand (over 60, pregnant women and disabled people) is exceptionally good at her job. She works quickly, but still finds time to chat making the usually annoying checkout process pleasant.
Originally from Natal, she lived São Paulo City for many years before moving to Goiânia and its more secure and less hectic lifestyle.

Maria - The Coconut Water Lady
Maria's stand next to CDI
On my way back from the supermarket, I always stop off and have a fresh Agua de Coco (coconut water – R$2.00 – US$ 1.08) at Maria’s stand and have a friendly chat. Her stand is next to a large medical facility, which is a good location…lots of foot traffic.
Maria is a cheerful lady despite having to sit at her stand for hours on end. She is originally from a the town of Castanhal, near Belem, which is located in the Northeast at the mouth of the Amazon. She moved to Goiânia to be with her daughter after her husband died. She makes the bus trip back once a year (leaves at noon on Sunday and arrives at 6:00 p.m. on Monday) to visit relatives – a 1,600 km or 1,000 mile trip.
