The New York Times has its “44 Places to Go in 2009″. Why 44? Anyway, one of the destinations is Florianópolis, Santa Carolina, Brazil. This is a short, typical travel article, but worth a read.
Updated: Sept 2012
I haven’t been to Flor. The wife has as well as friends. Only positive feedback. Gets a bit cold in the Winter (Jun-Aug).
One of the top cities for Brazilian to visit. Popular tourist destination in the Summer (Dec-Mar) for Brazilians and Argentinians. Not 3rd World, but still not to 1st World standards.
Read sometime back that executives in São Paulo were moving their families to Flor and commuting to SP for work via air.

Google Alerts came up with a blog posting from an American who backpacked through 24 countries including Brazil. He posted a list of Random Facts, Top 35 and his Best and Worse List….interesting. Has pixs also.
What I found funny (sad funny) was his last observation.
Last weekend, I heard the US Embassy or Government had a booth at the major shopping center here in Goiânia promoting Tourism in the USA. About six months ago there was someone from the State Department meeting with Educational and Tourism officials in Brasília, promoting “Study USA”. Neither of these American officials has had to apply for a Tourist or Student Visa at one of the American Consulates in Brazil, nor have they had to go through US Immigration on arriving in the US as a foreigner. If they had, they would have saved the US taxpayers some money and stayed home, because the problem is not a lack of interest in going to the US, but rather, the hassle getting there.
