Isn’t Brazil one of the current wonder economies? Is it very hard to find jobs, say in the banking sector?
Hi Soma,
You can’t work in Brazil unless you speak fluent Portuguese and have a work visa, which is usually only available to Executives or very high-skilled technicians or specialist.
ExpatBrazil
Say we have a Brazilian Work VISA, but it only allows us to stay 90 Days per visit. Is it hard to get a “Permanent VISA” or some kind of “Resident VISA”?
Permanent Visas are authorization to live here. Like the US Green Card. As a permanent resident you can work. To get one of these you normally have to be married to a Brazilian or have a Brazilian child. Work visas are temporary like the H1 in the US. You have one as long as you are working for the company that sponsored you. Link to visa section of the Brazilian Consulate in New York City. http://novayork.itamaraty.gov.br/en-us/visas.xml
Macae is definitly the worst town that I have been to in this area of Brasil. Camillo goes there 3 -4 times a year on business and unless he promises me a meal at Lucca’s I stay home.

Macae isn’t that bad. I’ve been frequenting brazil as a tourist while my partner works and have found it to be a great place! Not as busy and a little too quiet I must admit.
Hi Canadian,
Good to read a positive comment about Macae. At least it doesn’t snow there.

I have accepted a position in Macae and my employer is providing housing for me. I would like to know what would be a good area for an EXPAT to live and what the average or Mean cost for housing/Aptmennt would be.
My employer suggested a housing budget cost of R$2,000 but I feel this is much to low for Brazil. I’m not expecting the High-Life but I don’t want the gutter side either.
Recently I drove back from Macae to Rio via RJ101 or 106 and came upon a nice seaside town about 6-10 miles outside of Macae proper. My local Brazilian associate told me this was a more expat, family friendly town. Any thoughts what town this was.
I have been to Macae several times but stayed at the Four Points so I really do not have a feeling for the costs.
thanks,
TEXAN59
Hi Texan59,
I’ve never been to Macae.
Rio dasOstras is probably the better option based on what I’ve heard from an American woman (she’s from Houston) whose husband retired from Haliburton and they now live Nova Friburgo (in the mountains near Rio).
Her husband went over to Macae doing some freelance work for Haliburton (only a couple of days). Said Macae was ugly. She mentioned that RdO was nicer.
R$2,000 rent for a house is on the low side in my opinion. The house might be acceptable, but at that price I doubt it would be in the best neighbor. IE:
where other expats live.

In US$ Brazil is expensive due to the strong Real.

this has shifted slightly the last two months – the dollar gaining in strength and now almost two to one. but looking at dollar to Real only works if you are paid in dollars. The center of Macae is pretty awful but now there are pockets of better looking neighborhoods – I am only familar with Cavaleiros Beach. this is mostly hotels now but the surrounding area has many homes. and all along the beachfront through Rio dos Ostras there may be many places to rent – If right on the beach you will never find something for R$2000.00 – rent will also have the IPTU (property tax) and condo fees attached above the rental amount quoted. be sure to ask the total cost of the rent. Mar de Norte is a nice place.
Im a student from norway. Im going to stay in Macae working for FMC technologies for about 3 weeks
As my hotel that fmc rent for me, does not includ a gym facilities.
I was wondering someone had a tips for me where its possibel to work out( wight etc)
Hello Norway,
There are several upscale hotels, whose facilities you should be able to use for a fee. There also are fitness centers and gyms.

came by this thread because someone accessed Flowers from here – wanted to see what was happening. Noted that all started in 2010 – have you done an updated version for current info?
We were in Macae this last month – the central area is as bad as ever /dirty / crowded, increases in traffic making it difficult to move around. Hotels tend to stay full and have gotten more expensive than Rio – in some cases. Camillo and I usually stay at the Ibis in Cavaleiros because we can get easily to Luccas for dinner. We were told by the phone reservations (agent?) that they were full – only a R$300.00 room was available (same story for the comfort inn – only R$600.00) – the rooms normally are R$99.00 so Camillos said no. but after arriving we went there and from the front desk were ask – want a smoking or no smoking – High up ro lower – back or sea view? making us think more than 6 rooms were available and we paid R$119. plus 16.00 for a bad breakfast each…. So there is a possiblilty of a scam going on to get more for the rooms.
the city is improving street between Cavaleiros and Rio dos Ostras – many new apartment buildings have gone up in that area. We no longer rent coporate housing for the offshore guys but 5 years ago were paying R$3000.00 –
I realize that that question was old and has gone on by – but for sure people still stop buy and read your post.
Tchau Gringo gene.
Hi!
I am Brazilian and me and my fiancee (from Scotland) are planning on moving to Brazil. He is a Mechanical Engineer and in Scotland he works for companies that build tools for the oil industry. He wants to work offshore in Brazil and Im wondering if anyone can give me a contact of someone i can talk to in order to figure out his best options. He is also considering doing some courses in Scotland to be able to work offshore, so we would like to know what courses would allow him better job opportunities in Brazil.
Thanks.
Livia
Hi Liva,
He should apply to companies in Scotland for jobs in Brazil. From what I have read, it is very difficult for foreigners to get hired from within in Brazil due to visa and and lack of Portuguese. Check http://www.gringoes.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15072&PID=189763#189763 This is a thread discussing working offshore. Contact others in this discussion to get more information.
Thanks.. =)
