As a kid growning up in Southwest Oklahoma in the early 50′s, I can remember official racism -water fountains (white/colored), restrooms (white/colored), schools (white/colored). Yet, I also remember the “colored” woman who had a small farm to the west of ours and as I walked the country road from country school to home, she would give me a ride.
I remember the Supreme Court ruling in 1954 against “equal but separate” and the chaos that followed over the years…the Forrest Gump years.
So today is a big step forward for the United States on a journey that has yet to end. Perhaps, it is even a bigger step for the American people; especially African-Americans.

What town in Oklahoma are you from?
I have many friends in Carnegie, Anadarko, Hobart, Lawton, Chicasha and many around Oklahoma city and Stillwater.
Hi Ray,
Was raised in Lawton. Left when I was 16. Oklahoma was the State that most voted for McCain. My Dad was smart to leave when he did.
Nice folks and all my family are Okies, but too right-wing. Church on every corner. A level off Conservatism that that borders on radicalism…….in my opinion.
But:
Went to every OU Sooner home football game beginning in the Fall of 1953, when Notre Dame beat OU, until Nov 17, 1957 when Notre Dame ended the 47 game winning streak. Okies like their football.
I was in Hong Kong walking down the street and ran into Bud Wilkinson. I wanted to tell him how he had affected my life as teenager growing up in Oklahoma. But, I kept on walking…. He knew what he had done and who he was, but regret not shaking his hand and thanking him.
John Wayne is a hero in Oklahoma…love his movies, but not his politics.
I am so glad to see Bush back in Texas that it makes me want to sing the “Yellow Rose of Texas”.
ExpatBrazil
Hi ExpatBrazil,
I currently live in the Dallas area, got transferred here from the NE by my Co., anyway, weird people here in TX for the most part, if you know what I mean… I came here thanking
about buying a house and settling down w/ my family, you know, better climate than up north, things were supposed to be cheaper but… Housing does cost less here but not electricity, homeowners ins., sales tax and the like and then there’s the air pollution from the coal fired power plants and to make matters just a little bit worse, Bush has just moved here too…
Take care!
Joe
