Dr. Alexander Lénard. Dona Emma, Santa Catarina. 1910 - 1972. Hungarian Physician. Lutheran/Jew. Polyglot. He translated Winnie the Pooh into Latin. It was a ‘best seller’. Still in print. Winnie ille Pu.

He wrote ‘Valley of the Latin Bear’ in English. Then he wrote it again (not translated) in German. And then he wrote it again in Hungarian. He didn’t write it first in Hungarian because he figured he’d never get it published.

During World War 2 he lived in Rome. He spent time in the papal library studying and writing about the medical practices of the middle ages. He did many other things besides. After the war he helped the United Stated military to identify the remains of servicemen. He was offered a position as Professor of Medical History at a university in Hungary. He declined the offer because he figured he wouldn’t make a good communist. Then he was offered a job in Korea to identify the remains of American servicemen. He declined this as well. He moved to Brazil because it was a great big green place on the map of the world.

This man is one of my heroes. He arrived in Brazil about 1953. He was a genius and a kind, compassionate man.

He is why I want to go to Brazil.

:)
