International schools in Brazil (and around the World) are expensive. They are attended by children of the Brazilian elite and foreigners whose companies pay the school fees. Here are the fees for the American School in Rio. Harvard looks cheap!
Tuition & Fees
2007-08 Academic Year
Monthly tuition fees, to be paid in 12 installments:
Preschool Half-Day: R$ 2.054,00
Preschool Three Days/week: R$ 1.500,00
Preschool Extended Day: R$ 3.021,00
Lower School (Grades K-5): R$ 3.729,00
Middle School (Grades 6-8): R$ 4.050,00
Upper School (Grades 9-12): R$ 4.611,00 (the exchange rate: US$ = R$1.64)
Capital Fee: US $6,500.00
The US$6500.00 capital fee is a one-time fee assessed when students enter 1st through 12th grade for the first time. Upon request it may be paid in 12 equal installments. Children who enter preschool or kindergarten are only required to pay the Capital Fee in 1st grade. The Capital Fee is used for investments in technology or other areas. It is payable in Reais, based on the official U.S. dollar rate on the date of enrollment.
Bus Fees: range from R$ 270,00 to R$ 390,00
Lunch: Current prices are R$ 11,00 per day or R$10,00 per day for students who have signed up for cafeteria service. Prices may increase slightly in 2008/9.
