10% of the richest people in Brazil have 75% of the wealth
The Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA) of the Brazilian Government in a recent study stated that in São Paulo the wealthiest 10% had 73.4% of while in Rio they retained 62.9% and Salvador 67%.
Near the end of the 1800s, the richest 10% in Rio had 68% of the wealth. Not much progress.
IPEA attributes the primary cause for the poor wealth distribution to an outdated tax system that taxes the least wealthy up to 44% more than the most affluent.
So despite Brazil’s booming economy, there is still much to be done to improve the lot of the less fortunate.

Hi there,
I’m a former inner-city teacher who now lives in Brazil, too. After reading your blog, I’d like to know – what is your interpretation of these numbers? compared to the world? to the US?
Cheers,
Nika.
Hi Nika,
Good question. I don’t have any stats on other countries. Will look into that and see if I can’t expand on this thread.
In theory, 1st world countries should have more wealth in the hands of more people, but I wonder.
ExpatBrazil
According to 2005 stats, in Canada the top 20% of the population hold 69.2% of the wealth and in the USA the top 20% hold 84.7% of the wealth.
